Hi,

Ive got a good opportunity to do regular work for someone, well, a few times a month, connecting new pumps and motors, three phase stuff etc.

Its a new area for me and looking for some pointers and basic information on where to start really, is there any good books or literature anywhere that I can have a look at?

i know how to connect stuff, it's not that, it's more the way pumps and motors are connected as I know you have star and delta but would like someone with more experience to give me a few tips really.

any advice will be taken on board!

How large are the pumps and motors? You generally only get YD starting 5.5kW and above. Nowadays you're more likely to find pumps driven using a soft starter or a variable frequency drive than a YD unit.

I don't know the sizes, at a guess, various sizes, I might drop him an email and ask for some examples or what they are, the bloke is really nice and will be welcoming with me, I've been doing work in his house and he asked if I did three phases and pumps and motors etc and I said yes, I fid explain it was an area I had limited knowledge on but was happy to give me a shot.

and make sure your PL insurance covers working on 3 phase. a lot of policies exclude it.

He'll need PI insurance as well.

UKSparks drop me a MP and we'll sort something out.

“Pumps” are a big subject to generalise on. They could be a small submersible where you need to know about start reaction to 100’s of HP where other starting problems come in to play.

I doubt very much you will be “just connecting them up”, when they don’t work you’ll need to know why.

If they or controlled with inverters and a plc diver thorough PCs or a BMS system or alike. The instructions can be overwhelming. You can always get them going with the quick guide and do the installations and bring in a control's engineer to do the rest. The motor is simple and the inverter and panel wiring will all be in the diagrams but you'll need alot of experience for the programming. So god speed the right way I hope.

I understand that it's a minefield and saying motors is really just a very general term, I honestly have no idea of what type they are, I'll try to find out some more info then I'll have something a bit better to ask you, that way you will know what I'm referring to instead of the unknown.

Thanks Tony, I'll drop you a PM when I know a bit more, I guess unless I start somewhere I'll never learn, so it's a good opportunity to get me going, I may or may not need help and guidance on the first few, I'll certainly only stick to what I know as not to make a balls up.

Having read some of UKSparks posts I’m not helping him in the industrial sector. I don’t think he’s competent.
