Could some one describe examples of double insulation and reinforced insulation just to clarify things.

Is double insulation on the check list looking for class II equiptment ( 2 layers of insulation that do not allow you to tocuh the live parts and also do not require an earth) or is it looking for things like Cables (meter tails for example) with 2 layers of insulation between the live conductor.

Reinforced Insulation - Is this a strong insulation like those on meter test leads that are one pice of insulatin that is equal to 2 basic (pvc on t&e) insulating materials>?

Litle confused.

Thanks

have a look in the iee code of pactice for in service inspection and testing of electrical eguipment.(pat testing )what i mean is take the plastic handle of a iron that part is supplementary insulation then the air gap between that and the live parts are classed as basic insulation.hope this help

As far as I recall from my business machine days, double insulation, aka, Class II insulation (symbolised by a square within a square) is where there are no extraneous conductve parts. There must be no way of coming into contact with any LIVE conductor (electrically resistant enclosure to IP2x), snap together construction so no screwed fixings (they might be replaced with metal ones that could contact an internal LIVE part) and no way of coming into contact with the installations protective conductor, so no earth.

There's more I'm sure but that's the gist of it.
