i no its easy enough when you have a loft or void,but what about if its on the first floor how would you choose ur routes & positions for spots.i havent done no domestic work,& i know you haft to pull floor boards up,& wouldnt want to make a meal of it your advice would be nice.

Find your first joist by using a studwall detector. Mark the edges.
Measure 400mm along this will give you a rough guide to the next joist. use the stud detector to confirm.
If you don't have one of these detectors you could use a 3 inch nail and tap it through the ceiling until you find the edge of the joist.
You wil need to mark the centres in between the joist positions, use a chalk line to mark out the line positions, one end to the other.
 
if they dont want the floor up then try to fish back and forwards the way the joists run.
fish left to right till the joist gets in the way then drill a small hole next to the joist and fish the cable out and notch the joist from below then repeat as needed make good ceiling after
