I need to paint the house woodwork. I have an overhead power supply which is attached to the corner of the house tied (I really hope) into the wall though the fascia and gable barge board.

I think the supply cable probably dates from the 1980’s.

So can I ask for any advice on how to paint around this safely? Unless you guys advise otherwise my plan is to have a good look at the condition when I’m up there and, unless I can see cable through the armour, man up and get on with it – very carefully.

Alternative suggestions of finding a painter and decorator who I don’t particularly like, or visiting the local S&M society and borrowing their rubber-wear (we live in a very progressive village) have already been discounted. Although the wifes marigolds and a pair of wellies are probably do-able.

My fear is that I’ll be the wrong side of the RCBOs and I’m not sure what condition 30-40 year old cable is likely to be in. Oh, and I only have a metal ladder and access tower.

If the cable is the main supply to your house, it should be insulated. You should contact your local distribution network operator, and ask them to advise you. They can put some temporary covers on the cables. It is not something you should take lightly.
