Hi,

I'm looking to become a qualified electrician as it would help extremely in my current job as a Gas and AC engineer. I've been looking around and basically want to know what the best route for this is as I am working full time. I was looking at places like ableskills and tradeskills etc but obviously they will sell me whatever I'm after. What I want to know is how long the process usually takes. I have practical experience as my mentor for gas was a qualified electrician.

Thanks in advance

I did it the other way round, first electrical, then A/C, then Gas and i agree nowadays there is value in being able to sign off all required services for commercial clients. Are you employed, self employed, i.e run your own company? domestic or commercial or both ?

Probably best to ring NAPIT or the NICEIC and see what they require for you do be deemed competent to join their club and sign off electrical installs.

Like many many plumbers , fitters and HVAC guys , you just need to know enough so to sign off your electrical work ?

As above , if you want to do Domestic work, joining a scheme like Napit allows you to register notifiable changes / rewires etc direct to building control, just like you would do for Gas. Would check with them for entry qualifications, as you are already a tradesmen in Gas and A/C it may be appropriate to use a fast track scheme. I did this for Gas, used my own work for creating the log book of jobs using another gas safe engineer as my mentor through the process. Ditto for A/C. If you know a recently qualified electrician who can help you build a portfolio of work will be an advantage and get you practiced on the correct standards.
