Never realised how much I must of overtightened every screw in DBs and CUs in the past.

Just used Whias Torque Vario kit on a new CU and cant believe how little tightening is needed for MCB terminals:tounge_smile:

justr seen the price. trhe variable torque ones cost an arm and half a leg. what setting do you use for MCBs,?

These were wylex and recommend 2.5NM.

There're not cheap at all. Good thing is I won mine from Schneider Electric earlier this month. Did think about buying one though, glad i held off lol

cpc farnell do the non adjustable ones for about £25 + VAT. might treat myself.

cpc do a discount for 5 and 10

i'm between northwich and chester.

Via Professional Electrician and Installer Magazine, by any chance?? I always circle every one of those comps and all I've won so far is lots of junk mail...

Saw that one too. No it was directly from Schneider Electric. Subscribed to the e newsletter and there was a comp in the last one.

what's 2.5N-m in english? ft.lbs. iv'e got a torque wrench for wheel nuts etc. , but it's not VDE. have to wear gloves

this thing's 2'6" long. never been defeated by a rusty wheel nut. broke a few studs though.

I undwerstand, and I have used 12mm sockets to put cables away in a Dist Board

however the Dist boards tend to be the MCCB varity, not a spit load RCD board :-)

i'll rely on my right wrist followed by a good tug.

Got a brand new set of these around 3-4 years ago, still not used them & never will

After testing it out, i managed to get 3 turns on a termination with a normal screwdriver, i really wouldnt be able to sleep at night knowing id left a termination like that.

The housing associations were trying to get us to use them when changing a db etc.., still wouldnt use them

I was always taught "a loose connection is a dangerous connection"

Regulation 134.1.1 of BS 7671:2008 states:
Good workmanship by competent
persons or persons under their
supervision and proper materials shall
be used in the erection of the electrical
installation. Electrical equipment shall
be installed in accordance with the
instructions provided by the
manufacturer on the equipment.

How well do you think that above statement/regulation would hold up in a court of law when defending yourself against manslaughter when you have burned someones house down with kids in it?

"well i torqued it up and realised i could get a few more turns with a normal driver, but left it hoping it would be ok "

You will end up "dropping anchors in pooh bay " (prison time)

So which is right?
The manufacturers stated torque settings, or, as tight as you can do it?...

How many manufactures actually state max torque settings on boards and accessories. I think it is a commonsense thing. It is possible for a torque wrench to be satisfied and not achieve the set torque in some circumstances, especially at lower settings. IE corrosion on threads or dirt etc.

There is a lot more to bolted joints than that ruston, however, you are quite correct in your comments!

Note the ellipsis in my post... ;)

Yes I know there is ,I have worked in engineering since I were a lad lol . Most of us manage not to burn the place down.

Yes rushton I realise that, however, we now have some conflicting requirements don't we.
One says we must use manuf torque settings the other says we must be competent, and in doing so we realise that in certain situations these values may be of no use...
DOH!

to add to the confusion, mayt i say that on numerous occasions, i have tightened tails in CUs as tight as seemed reasonable without stripping threads. 10 minutes later, i can then get another half turn to a full turn on the terminals.
