Hi all,

I have a log cabin in my garden. An electrician ran an armoured cable from my consumer unit to the log cabin and this terminates on the outside in an exterior junction box. From there, there is a single circuit in the cabin that supplies two external security lights plus power sockets in the inside. At the time it was built, I didn’t think I would need any lighting except table lamps, but I am actually now using the cabin as a workshop for my DIY and wood-working. I have temporary lighting at the moment but would like to have a two way consumer unit with a lighting and power circuit in the cabin and then install proper lighting. I am an experienced amateur electrician, (no laugher please!) but I always work within the rules and never do anything that doesn’t comply with regs. The new consumer unit would be a new sub-circuit I believe? Does this mean I must have my electrician in to do the work or is this something I could do?

If there is electricity there already, then the circuit already exists. It is not a new “sub circuit”

There would be no difference in adding a 5A switched fuse connection unit to the existing socket circuit and running the lights off that.

Just ensure that the sockets in the shed are rcd protected, either within the shed or at source in the house.
