Hi folks first post
Trying to repair/refurbish a CH system for a friend which had stopped working. Worked on loads of Y plans faults in the past but never seen anything like this one

Glow worm Fuel Saver 50
Drayton Programmer
Honeywell Stats and 3 port valve.
Smashed room stat replaced

The system had stopped working. Initial testing showed boiler fan wasnt working. Bench test confirmed fan faulty and fan replaced.
With new fan installed still no output to spark generator and gas valve via PCB.

Pressure Switch restrictor checked, blocked, and cleaned.Operation confirmed.

Spark Ignition now working boiler ignites boiler cycling on and off. Boiler igniting even with programmer set to off (overrun?) and kettling which suggests to me pump isnt running in this state. Pump valve and tanks all situated in loft

More work and head scratching required. Any body experienced similar

Hi.

Sounds like a mid pos valve issue, as even with the programmer off it still has a permanent live present. But then if it is faulty and sending a call signal to the control box then it should be operating the pump also. Could the pump be faulty perhaps??

it sounds to me, if the pump is running the mid-port valve is at fault as you mentioned it kettling, thats a sign of overheat, and it could also be if the mid-port valve is working which as you know, feel the pipes and see, if its ok then the heat exchangers possibly blocked hence the kettling.

No not always mate, i have had many a time when the pump and the mid/pos valve is ok and its been the heat exchanger blocked, might not be in this case, but it has happened, unfortunatley its a bad do unless you are on somesort of maintenance plan with somebody, might as well get a new boiler.
