Re Claus v clause….. I blame autocorrect.

The wombles were an endangered species even back in the 80’s. I believe Orinoco finally passed away in captivity around 2000.

they were doing OK till Maggie closed down Wimbledon Common.

Only the one breeding female, and a geriatric alpha male. The species was doomed.

I have heard there’s been some DNA found, and they might try and clone them at some time.

it may be possible to clone one or two of the forum's older members. some are a close resemblance.

This is going to indicate just how stupid I am, but the first time I went diving in the sound of Mull I remember thinking ah Tobermory, it must be named after the womble who wore tartan.....

I was naive and innocent back them it would appear.

They are not Wombles but the Ood from Dr Who.

It was George Michael that closed down Wimbledon Common not Maggi. ?

I think he made it "popular" amongst certain gentlemen.

Clapham Common wasn’t it?

Or so I’ve heard

@Julie, sadly not in Glasgow...it's in Spain?
I was working in Tenerife years ago... and needed some stainless 3-way valves... I was going to get them shipped from the UK thinking there was no way I'd find them there, but tried asking around first. To my amazement, I found a local store that had the best ever selection of anything to do with stainless steel/plumbing/machining etc. etc... By far superior to anything I knew of in the UK... and on such a small island ! I later discovered all sorts of other places that stocked whatever you wanted !

Tobermory...what about Bulgaria?
Always hoped to find a Spanish galleon sunk deep in the mud of Tobermory bay...imagine all those Pieces of Eight!

thought the spanigoles only sent galleond to south america. some of them escaped you on the way back though.

Tel, the Spanish Armada got blown off course, and when they heard tales of the delights of the Mishnish hotel in Tobermory they decided that was a great place to stop for a day or two...the rest, as they say, is history!

Diving off Mull reminded me of this Donegal diving club.

For those unfamiliar with this island, the link is perfectly safe and it's a real club in a real village.

Yes I have a few diving friends who are members and take great delight in flashing their membership cards and tee shirts!

Not my sort of thing...

Ahh the mishnish.... many a night having too much to drink in there, BIG hangover for the dives the following day.

There are a few places around mull and the northern islands all with stories of sunken armada ships full of gold.

The only one actually found is in Loch fyne - diving prohibited as it is being surveyed and examined by marine archaeologists - no gold mind you.

Not sure how big the club is in terms of actual divers as it's now best known for having capitalised on marketing.

I don't think it is actually a true diving club, just name only and marketing now as it isn't affiliated to any diving agency.

Talk of Tobermory brings me back to the ironmongery thing. Brown's was an emporium that sold everything back in the old days. Spares for anything, primus stoves, kettles, nuts and bolts...squeaky wooden floors, shelves creaking under the weight of the assorted wares, and at one end, an off-sales..
A bit like "Open All Hours" the proprietor often stood in the doorway looking up and down the main street hoping to entice a customer in...

Pretty certain it is a scuba diving club (at least it was at one time). I know PADI wants nothing to do with them, but I believe that's due to the image they market - not exactly becoming of a professional association.
