Customer getting a funny about paying a deposit.....! Job £1200, deposit £360

Out of nearly over 400 jobs never had a an issue with this.

Always request a deposit of 30% on jobs over £500 in value.

All clearly stated in T&C's.

Anyone else had a prob with this ?

Sent a curtious email back stating just standard practice and referring him to relevant No.s of my T&Cs.

No deposit then he can get somebody else, dont work that way sorry - dont need his work got enough going on so he can stick it ! (thats better mini-rant over)

Matey is car sales man, so might be expected really

Any thoughts please - hope your all having a nice weekend,

Sy

hmm..... no want pay deposit... no want pay for job.... walkies time. but seen this on the rogue traders, cowboy builders etc.etc. programme advises customers not to pay anything upfront as the contractor gets his materials on account and doesn't have to pay for them for a month. then when the customer don't pay, who ends up in the county court? you guessed it. me and you for trusting the plonker in the 1st place.

For me its all done on trust I am afraid I dont ask for a deposit but I only do jobs up to £600-700 and I have only recently walked away from a job with a £120 loss in money terms or 4 hours of my time but as they say I take the approuch if you are in a hole stop digging.

Me too, only have one bad debt at the mo, for about £120 from a client worth 60 million!

Me too, I only have one bad debt of £345 from a client who lives in a £million + house.

I really don't understand twxts like this. Deep pockets and short arms!

I forgot to add I had 3 bad debts last year
£50 that was paid eventually ( This was an individual)
£45 that will never get paid( This was an individual)
£110 that will never get paid ( this was a company who went bust)
I must admit I must be taking a £150 loss on average every year but I am lucky as I dont take on big jobs

When doing plc's in any panel i set up a timeout with password lock, if i get paid i just make an excuse that i need to upload an alteration in programming if i dont get paid it effectively stop the machine from running ive only needed it once but its amazing how quickly money gets Bacc's into your account when the machine needs attention, last guy got 3 electricians out to try get around not paying me but none of them managed it and one wiped the programme for which i charged an additional fee to re-install it minus the shut-down feature....... it might sound underhand but its not for financial gain by deception its just a little insurance policy .:grinningelf:

That’s sneaky and underhand. Something I would never consider….
Unless it’s a certain international company I fell out with.

I take deposits and find it seperates the wheat from the chaff.
I have lost 1 customer in 8 years through them not wanting to pay a deposit.

Some clients are worth walking away from

I dont do it as a rule as i know and im well established with my customers but occasionally il get one off's, you know you walk in the factory all the safety guards have been over-ridden to save time , and looking like immigration control regarding the workers who more often than not have little use for the English language. Il walk away sometimes but do background checks on those that i take a chance with as these are customers of my customers so just trying to keep my name in the good books.
Its sneaky: yes!, Underhand: no! as i dont do it to cheat the customer i do it to add a little security to what i consider a risky customer, i dont use it to get anything more than im owed.
Im a one man band and a big unpayed job can do alot of damage as these jobs usually have alot of time and money invested and as i say ive employed the methed only a few times and once payed i wipe the timer off the programme with no-one none the wiser. The timer is usually approx 5months and some of my customers pay on 12 weeks so its a couple of months on top and from experience- if you havent seen a penny after 5months its looking grim.

Some control systems can now be fitted with receivers for remote fault diagnostics and sometimes correctional measures,, would you think its sneaky to send a update online to stop a machine working if the customers isnt paying and had been sent final demands, its saves alot of hassle and legal bills and i cant see them ever taking me to court for.

I left one company under what I would say “not the best of terms” my decision to leave as I was fed up with being dumped on from a great height. I’ve got to admit I left them a leaving present on a couple of the plant PC’s

Guess thats better than in the office plant pots Tony!

Well gave him the benefit of the doubt.... god knows why !

Promised paying deposit this Wednesday - still nothing.

So just fired off a quick email (as below) - thats better scrubbed him out the diary also : t.w.a.t
Dear ---,

Enlight of our previous correspondence in which I have explained my companies terms and conditions regarding the payment of the deposit, which I have yet to receive. I am now not prepared to continue with this contract. Should the deposit be received in the near future it will returned within 5 working days.

I suggest you seek an alternative contractor, good luck with your project.

Regards

I agree with telectrix

Yeah i did that... just the one time and you guessed it He didnt pay... If they refuse to pay why work for them? Stick to your guns and find other work..

Or you can always get your admin to slap a statutory demand order on him and then its in the courts hands.. It normally scares the crap out of ur clients if they refuse to pay.. If they dont pay the courts will order a CCJ on him and he wont be able to get a business loan or anything for a few years...

hope tht helps
