I've been asked to quote on testing appliances around the southwest area's. I haven't got a PAT tester at the moment so would be greatful of suggestions.

I'll be looking into the PAT Charging link to find a guide price on costings etc, but my big question is....Is it worth it?? Would be nice to add another string to the bow for when times get quiet, but does the initial outlay justify the reward?

It's been a few years since I've done any PAT testing so was wondering if anyone has any good advice on which tester to look to buy and costs etc.

Thanks all.

I've got a Metrel unit which allows you to enter a "description" for each item you test and thus the results and description etc are downloaded to your PC which makes the creation of the "report" far easier.

Do the sums, only you will know if its worth while, but I offer the service, but don't go out of my way to promote it as I find it a bit boring!

I've just PM'ed you some information.

I own a seaward used it very rarely but it's a nice bit of kit hand held and small in comparison to others

I'm obviously not looking to spend too much money on my first unit, but think the downloadable version is the way to go? Would you agree?

If your regularly testing >50 items a downloading tester is recommended. I've used most the available PAT testers on the market and my personal favourites are the Seaward Supernova Elite or Plus. They are heavy to lug around though, but the testing is comprehensive and versatile.

Hi, definitely go for a downloadable machine, the ammount of time saved by not having to manually input all the data, will allow you to have some time to yourself rather than sit at a computer for hours after you have finished the job.I use a metrel betapat plus, it is really good.

Hi Ponty,

I have a seawood Europa plus with the elite software. Again, i only use mine on a 3-6 month basis for in house testing here at work, but its a total doddle with this kit. It can store up to 10,000 results and around 100 locations i believe all of which are saved to the memory which saves a lot of time entering information etc. I also have a bar code scanner and a printer which reels off individually bardcoded labels with unique appliance references so when you come to retest at a site, you just scan the label and it brings it up on your tester with all the necessary tests pre entered and ready to go.

It was an expesnvie machine and i appreciate your not looking to spend a fortune but as the other lads have said, downloadable machines are the way to go if you plan on doing regualr testing and want to get a job done and on to the next one quickly. After all, time is money, and PAT testing can be a ball ache if your faffing about with always entering details into an awkward key pad on a machine.

Just wanted to bump this thread to see what people thought of the above unit??

Cheers all...

It certainly does, if you've got the qwerty kb, it is easy to input the item description and location, once the tests are finished, just connect the machine to your pc and download the results onto the software. You can then print off professional looking result sheets for the customer without too much effort.
Hope it goes well!

I think most of these PAT testers all do the basic required tests. It's then down to whether or not it has memory functions, and from then on it's down to the extra functions like flash testing, IT facilities tests, 110V compatible, etc...

So you pays your money and make your choice. lol!!! Basically it's all down to what you need the machine to do and how much your prepared to pay for the test kit!!!

I have a Megger PAT4dv its bomb prof and after 10mins practice a doddle to use - only downside - it was 650.

I bought it as I have an MFT1553 for my electrical work and that is a great bit of kit.

I actually don't see how you can make a living from PAT testing, I like to think I am pretty clued up, I have 2330, 2391, 2377 etc etc but I have never been able to do more than 10 items an hour unless its just extension leads.

I also provide full paperwork certification including, appliance register / QA traceability report / the cert and guidance notes so that adds another 30 mins to the job....

You've answered your own question, i have no interest in adding 2377 to my ever expanding qualification numbers, far too many cowboys/production lines churning out items at 50-99p, **** that

You've obviously spent an extra day adding 2377 to your DISQ, well done

Give me one good reason why I'd need 2377
Read my post again. I am only speaking for myself (probably a bit louder) and don't understand why it offends you in particular.

Slow down mate! If you don't like it, move on. It's not mandatory that you reply to every post on this forum.

I really don't understand why you are so overjealous and grumpy! Get some help.

Cheers!
