Is this tinned copper and is it classed as copper with regards scrap metal?

I am having a cable stripping day in the garden whilst the rain clouds have gone. A few cables from older houses look like they are tinned copper. Here is a picture of the tinned copper and normal copper. Is it tinned copper? It was taken from imperial cable. Also, will the scrap yard treat...

2 prong appliances with metal casing, are they safe to use ?

I recently learned the importance of electrical grounding and checked all appliances in my home. Toaster, Microwave oven have 3 prong power cord, so their metal casing would not cause any shock if the device has worn out connection inside. Some others like fans on the floor have only 2 prong and...

Screws on Metal Backbox won’t tighten.

I’ve been changing some sockets and the last one won’t tighten. They have used 75mm screws. The screw just slides into the lug. I’ve got a CK 3.5mm tap and tried that. Still no luck. Has anyone any tips or tricks? Or any screws that I could buy to make it tighter in the lug?

Metal CU in a commercial setting

Hi, Just wondering what people interpretations of the regs are regarding metal CU's in a commercial setting. I've seen some people code them C3 on an EICR and others say that the Metal CU's are just for domestic settings. I've read the regs and I think they could be read either way. Anyone any...

I need to bring some flex cables through so corrugated metal sheeting which is on the upper side wall of an industrial unit. This is to supply some floodlights. EICR Code for metal light switches with earth to backbox

Posting this more as a discussion than seeking advice, as I've already fixed the issue. EICR on a house which at some point had been 'done up' with metal face plates for all the switches. When checked with a wander lead R2 was within spec on the ones I tested, but when taking a random one off...

UK Plastic to metal consumer unit

Hi Looking for some advice please. I started renovating my house in 2015 and as part of this I ripped out all the wiring and got my electrician to rewire it including a new plastic consumer unit. There is still some electrical work to do so none of it had been signed off yet. As the plastic...

    2 core cable Metal surround?

So I've just bought a plug-in wall-mounted light from Habitat (link at the end) which I intend to remove the cable from and wire into the mains. Although I will use 3 core cable I was surprised to see that the existing cable used nis 2 core which goes into a plastic socket and the main surround...

    Metal CU. Why?

Metal CU. Am curious to know why the UK regs demanded a metal CU. Would it not have been helpful to first investigate what was causing overheating the CU?

    Low profile metal trunking?

Currently on a job which is a garage extension. I have lots of cabling dropping down to multi gang switches, sockets etc and a small DB. The ceiling is however a fire barrier. Does anyone make a low profile steel trunking that will butt neatly to a metal clad socket or small DB?

    Metal cabinet requires polarised plug

My understanding is that metal cabinet needs to be grounded to the common or neutral 3 wire. Questions: When is 3 wire required and when 2? Why are some plastic cabinets polarized 2 wire or 3 wire? Why is this metal cabinet space heater that im try to fix, why its 2 wire and neither is...

    AM2S Metal Conduit Clarification

Hey Just dropping this question to anyone that's passed the AM2S. Could i get some clarification on what the AM2S specification require's for the metal conduit. I've heard contradicting requirements. XS training online videos states that the metal conduit has a 3x 90' bends and a 45' offset...

Went to a job today and noticed a length of metal conduit going across a pathway. The metal conduit is not earthed.

I just wondered what people’s thoughts were as to weather it should be earthed being an extraneous conductive part? It’s fixed to the concrete floor and if there was a break down in insulation there could be a potential difference. If you do bond it could it be introducing a risk? 1598092922...

    SWA metal exposed on main

I’m having a new wall constructed. Whilst digging the foundations the workers came across the incoming main. Note that the steel armour is entirely exposed. U.K. power came to confirm it was their cable but didn’t mention anything relating to the cables condition. Surely this is a ticking time...

DIY lamp with metal bulb holder - is it safe?

Hi, I'll start by saying I'm not an electrician (I'm more of a mechanic), but I like to have a go at wiring on occasion. I'm wanting to make a one-off table lamp from an old defunct machine I have, so I purchased some 3 core cable, a UK plug with fuse, an E27 bulb and a 'vintage look' metal...
