Discuss 17th edition course 2382-1 (Big green book on the way)?? in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hello chaps I have the opportunity to enrol on a 17th edition course.
The BRB course.

I have to pay £500 for a twelve week evening class course and this is just before the new amendments come out (Big green book)

There is no real pressure for me to get this exam, there is no time limit on me.
I can just as easily take the exam in January.

I have OSG, BRB and a load of other books that act as kind of guides to the 17th edition.

My questions are:

1. Would you not bother taking this exam and wait until the new amendment course.

2. If I took this course would I be able to just sit the exam on the new amendments or will I have to take another twelve week course.

The reason I am tempted to take the BRB course now is because I have so many guides on the regulations already (I must have about four different 17th edition guide books published by different authors), I do not really have to by any new books as I already have them all.

If I took the big green book course I would have to buy various guides etc to the new amendments.

I apologise if this has been asked before but I have an enrolment this evening, and I want to go and have a chat with the college before I decide to part with my hard earned and limited cash.

What would you do?

Thanks very much.

i believe that if you took it now , on the brb, you would only have to do an update for the amendment next year. but £500 seems steep to me. i would have thought about 1/2 of that was par in a college.

College in midlands charging £168 for the update and I am sure the 2382 was £346 (10 wks/3hr). Will check the £346 though.

I thought I had to have taken the 16th edition in the last three years to be able to do an update, that's what I was told at Guildford college but according to this website in order to qualify I need

"City & Guilds - 2360 Level 3 in electrical Installation Part 2. Certification post January 2004
City & Guilds - 2381 16th Edition. Certification BS 7671 post June 2001"

And I have both so this option seems a lot cheaper.

I read City & Guilds' information and they indicate that there will be no update course. 2382-12 will be the full Amendment 1 course.

There is no update course.

C&G have stated that the 2382-12 (starting this month) will be the required qualification to prove underpinning knowledge of BS 7671 : 2008 (2011)
The 2382-10 will stay running till 31st December for existing candidates, but it will not cover any competence to amendment 1.

That's it then.

If there is no update course for the big green book and only a complete course is being taught then there is absolutely no point me doing the 17th now, I should just wait until next year and do the 17th edition first amendment course.

I do think this is another con as a person could do a 17th edition update when holding a sixteenth edition certificate however if a person holds a 17th edition certificate they are not allowed to update to this first amendment, they have to pay for a complete course.

These courses are obviously getting more expensive and unnecessary. I mean the difference between the 16th and 17th was very big and a person could do an update in just one day for a reasonable amount of cash.

The difference between the 17th and this first amendment is not so great and yet a person cannot do an update they have to spend £500 on evening classes to learn what they mostly know already.

What are your thoughts on this, am I seeing this correctly?

Thanks.

This is as much info as C&G have given so far.
I have just completed putting together an amendment 1 presentation for some free seminars I will be delivering and TBH there is a lot of information. We are in discussions at the moment as to what to advise guys. As to weather to hold off for the 2382-12, or do the 2382-10 now and offer them to do the 2382-12 qualification when it is in full swing and just deliver the update requirements at that time, therefore not costing an additional £500 or so, just a day and an exam fee.

Unless C&G do concede and run a 2382-20 style course for the new amendment, I can see most centres considering enrolling guys to do the 2382-12 on a short update course if they already hold the 2382-10.

If it is not absolutley essential right now I would suggest you wait a month (possibly two).

I think it will be counter productive if C&G do not offer an update to those with the 17th . I think a large number who are fed up buying books and courses to bin will just not bother.
It's a good job they do'nt want you to resit your driving test every time a new innovation on a car is developed, or the highways dept put a new roundabout in.
