I had a bloke here yesterday trying to sell me advertising on YELL.Com, I was wondering what others thought, and if it was worth the money.

Ian Yell.com will be just one of them that will call you to advertise on their site and usually when you are at the top of your steps!

You will get plenty of Directory sites; Police & Fire Brigade calendars call you with the usual 'we are only looking for one electrical contactor in your area' rubbish, and plenty of impressive statistics. There are lots of them.

Its all down to the cost and they can sound attractive but the key is spending your money wisely and making it work otherwise that £200-£300-£400 etc will be wasted money that could have gone on something else - maybe a scheme membership that you do need to work?

I have previously advertised with Thompson Directories (yell couldn't be bothered to return my call) and the responses from the advert was absolutely crap. It was included the main book and online and to be fair looked like a real good advert but the results proved otherwise.

If you are considering advertising, I would scout around first and find what you think would make a good impact for your business with the best results. Set yourself a budget and try and monitor the responses to see if it works.

Also barter with the firms because they will all want your business. Get the best price from them because if it does work for you then you will want to continue advertising next year.

hi, i did and funk all, also those calenders or other bollow publications id never seen/heard of...if i not know of them chances are no one else has!!! keep it local, i advertise in shop windows and local papers,the free papers are ok but as our man warren said you gotta barter!!! i say when they phone and sound all exited that they trying to do you a massive favour" if your that confident if i advertise with you ill get loads of work then give me first month free and well go from there........."
 
All the above i agree with, i have a website www.kfordsparkey.co.uk and am linked with all online directories, set up cost £400 + £35 a month after, work generated ZERO. All these other magazines, load of rubbish, i get all my work from the local free paper, one night in local paper and a small village magazine that goes out once a month. I set up my business in july and have wasted money on leaflet drops, website, advertising in specialist sections in paper, probable cost £2000, oh forgot to mention got one job the other week from my thomson local ad, so thats payed for itself at least.

My advice is simple, if it sounds to good to be true as anything in life it probably is, i was told 150 people looked at my website last month, yet funnily enough no one called to ask for a quote. My website might be crap but you would have thought someone would have called.

Good luck to us all, everyday is like a small battle in this game, working for yourself is the hardest yet most rewarding thing i have ever done, oh and the christmas party was great, free beer all night (4 pints).

i advertise with yell and probably just about covered the costs but nothing fantastic. as soon as your add pops up online the phone never stops with people trying to flog you other ads and mobile phones cos your contract is just about up(no its not)

I can't even get your site to load. Could that be the problem???
 
i spent £1000 november(2007) last year on yellow pages ad and 2 x yell.com ads, and made my money on it by Jan 2008.

Spent £1800 this november and have nearly covered that already from jobs. i find i get about 2-3 jobs per month from yell.

Interesting sounds like it has been money well worth spent in your case then. :)

Do you know that the work has definately come from those ads or do you advertise in other areas?
