Hi everyone
While I am well aware of the dangers of asbestos, how do you recognize he stuff? Farm sheds are often roofed with he white stuff but that's all i could recognize. Ive never even seen brown or blue.
What about Artex?
Also can anyone recommend what kind of, mask / respirator, should be worn?

Try The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006. It's a positively rivetting read!

As a start point try Where can you find asbestos?

My personal view is if in doubt, get it tested. There is also a requirement for premises to hold a register of hazards and to protect everyone from the hazard. In the real world where farmers take gazillions of pounds in subsidies and a seemingly carefree attitude to dafety spending, only experience will show where asbestos might be lurking but as I'm assuming you don't want to risk dying through ignorance;
a. Get on course
b. Learn what yr told
c. Apply it in the workplace

Depending on what it is yr doing you may even require licensing, particularly if yr removing and disposing.

Good luck :O)

thanks Desertbootz

I,m just embarking on the voyage of becoming a domestic electrical contractor and my main worry is Artex at the moment

Not sure about Artex (?) but recently i was involved in a house that was flooded.

Old lathe and plaster ceilings had come down.

Insurance assessor came round, sealed the rooms off and took a sample of the plaster with him for testing.

When questioned why, we were told that in days of old, in wasnt just horsehair that was used in the plaster, but also cattle hair.

He said there was a possibility that it could have contained anthrax!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needless to say the result was negative:rolleyes:

Still, you never know.

what is the problem with artex?

hi there
it contains asbestos in some types of asbestos based artex. a guide is in that it is usually in old buildings. ?

we have found it in buildings from the 1990s and it is not easy to tell the only way is to have it sampled to make sure and if it is have it removed safely.

in the electrical industry it is everywhere fuse holders, cabinet housings, 1960s council hosing, schools everywhere.

you must risk assess it before you distrub it !!

check the hse site for asbestos:) guidance loads on there about it

when in doubt leave it out is my motto

cheers:p

Hey.

Some artex, infact most contains the asbestos type chrysotile.

When we were doing house bashing for local authority we had to go on a course on asbestos to learn how to deal with it.

Some older floor tile coverings are asbestos as is pipe insulation - the old mat type.

As has been said any commercial/industrial premesis will have asbestos surveys detailing all asbestos present in the building

Cheers.

It always depends on the urgency

I've worked with tons of the stuff, power stations, hospitals etc...

Now in early stages to suit the suits full care is shown

Yet when in crisis situations...it's gorra be done this week (prefer weekend, no gaffers about) do it...it ain't asbestos blah blah blah they will do it disregarding the problem, I do know they do on every single job.

I've had the endoscopy stuf, when I thought I had had it, but lucky for me I had pneumonia !

I refused at all times after about 1983 to work anywhere near asbestos, in fact I was fired more than once for refusing to work where I knew asbestos was present. I got fired unlawfully, but hey better red than dead

Asbestos problems is probably now past it sell by date, if anyone now works with it, sorry it's your fault

The next one will be fibre glass insulation, it is an irritant no question. Every single contractor in the country knows it is, yet the powers that be keep shoving it in...except some scientists are now saying fibre glass insulation will be a major health hazzard in years to come. 95% of houses have it.

HSE need to stop pandering to government (trouble is they are are paid by them) and stop worring about hard hats on sewage/ water treatment plant and do something ******* useful for a change

hi
i did some training in asbestos some years back , it used to be in everything from the old black toilet seats to gas mask filters!Basically if you have doubts dont touch it, if someone a says a certain type is ok their wrong, blue brown white any can kill you ,only it gets you like 10 yrs later when youve forgot all about that ceiling you drilled through, and its not a pleasant way to go.
in regard to masks you should have it tested and fitted properly, you get hooked up to a machine for like 10 mins which checks air flow round your face(you have to be clean shaven) to make sure theres no gaps for particles the minimum you would need i s a half mask with p3 filter and change filters after every use , but just avoid it.leave it to specialists.

Hi,

I'm a council tenant and I have peeling paint on my artex ceiling, I have been advised this is a potential hazard due to asbestos. We have been living with this for some time and I have a 6 month old baby to think of. As a result I have started a campaign against Milton Keynes Council to increase the amount of asbestos info given with tenancy agreements.

Please support my cause and follow my blog or join my facebook group. If I am going to make a difference I need to show I have support!
