what do you guys recommend when it comes to van size for a sparks needs.

long wheel base vivaro, vito etc

or small transit connect, combo or pug??

all depends what work you are intending. for domestic, consider parking in narrow teraced streets, a connect of citroen dispatch is ideal. for industrial, you may want to get 3m lengths of containment in, so a vivaro or full size transit is best is better.

For domestic I have chosen a swb Transit van.

I was working with a chap who had a small citroen and it was just too small in my opinion. This chap was also very particular about keeping everything organised and it still meant having to move items to get to others.

I have racked my van out myself and I keep everything including my ladders and lengths of trunking inside. Keeps it all clean and dry.

whats fuel consumption like on the swb transit?

I've been using approx £30 - £40 per week which is mostly local around the City of Bristol. Short trips stuck in traffic.

It's a bog standard 1999 2.5D (Non Turbo)

I love it and think the fuel is good but then before that I was using my 3.0litre m3 with a heavy foot :D

i had a primastar, which is a nissan badged renault trafic/vivaro. the 1.9 dci. 45mpg. nice to drive, but about as reliable as a trabant.

A Nissan ****star, by jove old chap.
Vw T4 if you can find on in good nick, go for the TDI 102bhp.Built like a tank, dont go wrong.
How somebody who drives a Transit can say Transporters have issues is beyond me, EGR anybody??
All vans have issues....................

Irrespective, buy a Transporter. I have the 140 BHP and it's like you know what off a spade :) Second choice a VW Caddy if you dont need so much room

I get 40mpg from my 2008 Transit. More reliable than a VW too, they have gearbox issues.
To be fair I think the 174bhp model has had some problems. I have the 130 and the only problem I have had is the gear knob coming off, just the plastic bit not the whole lever and I replaced the window switch. Not bad in four years.

I get between 30 -40 mpg depending on the roads, lots of country lanes around here with tractors holding everyone up

Then again Transit???
