Hi,

I’m trying to install a new extractor fan in my bathroom.

the existing fan had three wires going to it which were red yellow and blue (There is a blank wire but this was not connected to nothing) but I don’t know what ones are live earth neutral etc to wire up the new fan.

the old fan come on when you turned on the light and went off after a minute once the light went off.

Any help is much appreciated.

You’ll need to work out which one is permanent live, switched live, neutral and earth. Suggest you get some professional help to decipher as colours aren’t always wired according to convention.

Without knowing for sure how the old fan was connected, I would summise the blue is neutral, and its a 50/50 which of the red and yellow is permanent live and which is switched live.

Repeat, this is assuming the old fan was connected properly in the first place.

The bare wire is the earth, and if the fan doesnt need it, then it should be sleeved in green/yellow sleeving and connected safely into a small connector block and left, avoiding contact with any other connection

If that's the connector for it, in the photo, you've got the wrong fan.
Whatever, get someone qualified to do the installation as your obviously out of your depth with it.

That’s not the connector in the photo, that’s for a light.

thanks dustydazzler and littlespark, I have a better idea of what’s what, I’m sure it will all be grand now. Just out of interest, If I was to come off this extractor block and wire in a light that come on with the extractor fan (in-line) I take it I’d wire the blue to the neutral and yellow to the live at the light to switch it on and off with the fan

So, are you putting new lights in, too?
