Hi everyone. I’m not an electrician I am just hoping for some advice please.

I have recently converted an old brick shed to a room in my house. Previous owners had a light in there so I kept out the wires so the fitting could be moved.

I had an electrician come out to fit a new LED, it didn’t work. We thought the light may be faulty so got a new one which also isn’t working. Have tried it on a normal ceiling rose which again isn’t working.

The electrician said there is power there so we are not too sure why it isn’t working.

My question is what should the next step be, do I need to remove the ceiling? (There is nothing above the ceiling but a concrete type roof so can’t be accessed from above.

Sorry for the long post and hope it makes sense

I am somewhat surprised the electrician could not identify the issue with a few simple tests.

He is due to come back this week but was just wondering if it’s likely I’ll need to have the ceiling removed it’s all brand new and I would maybe rather look into other lighting options rather than do that

There is no way of knowing until the issue is diagnosed.

Electrician? We have doubts.

If the light doesn’t work, then he should switch into fault finding mode. Not just swap out fittings.

He has power, but does he have enough power?

How is he testing he has power? Volt stick or neon screwdriver? Only tests line. 2 prong tester between L and N tests both. Between L and E doesn’t test the neutral return path.

How is it wired? Loop in at light, loop in at switch or via a joint box? Where is that box now? Above ceiling?

It should have been diagnosed within 5 minutes. It’s the repair job that takes more time
