Hello to you all

Just thought I would come across from from the Dark Side (plumbing forum)

Getting a bit boring over there so though I would step over into the Light for some Live action, I will try to remain Positive never a Neutral no matter what is thrown at me, I will not get Phased.

Sorry guys, just looking our a bit more simulating posting rather than the eternal "how do I fix my bog" or "copper is just so much better than plastic"

Plumber by trade, wired my own controls since I was 20, management most of the time then teaching apprentices (plumbing & heating) including Part P G & L until just over a year ago, I now look after apprentices for a national utilities company cable jointers (as well as gas/water) & trying to understand the C&G 2339 L2.

Treat me gentle.

Not as brave as some of you lot trying to earn your living as a domestic spark's.

Mind you I liked your move to insist on L3 NVQ followed by AM2 as the minimum entry requirement, is it working do you think?

It works in theory, unfortunately too many people don't want to pay the cost of a qualified sparks and use the cheapest alternative.
It only gets found out when someone gets hurt.
Notifiable work that doesn't get notified is the biggest problem!

The schemes' money grabbing attitudes of assessing people as competent when they are a million miles away is a far bigger problem than non notified works in my opinion. Unless they're done by a builder, in which case, they're often level.

I don't quite understand Englishman? Plumbing has the same problems with the Building & Water Regs but it is the non enforcement not the Regs themselves.

I thought the assessing of people as competent when they are not was supposed to be dealt with by the AM2 if not the NVQ.
I worked in an AM2 centre and it alway seemed a fair test of there skills & knowledge to this poor plumber?

Granted not many seem to fail but I took it that was due to them being almost exclusively being apprentices (JTL)

Nothing wrong with the NVQ and AM2, and they will get you JIB grading, but the schemes (NIC, NAPIT, Elecsa etc) don't care about whether or not you have that, and as a result, you get people who've worked in an office their whole life who do a 5 week course to become a "fully qualified electrician" and after that, they show a scheme 1-3 jobs which they say they've done, answer a few basic questions, pay £500 and they're then registered as "competent". And that, is the problem.
