Hi everyone,

I hope this is a simple question!

I have purchased a double insulated class 2 pendant light fitting. Is it safe to convert it to a plug-in lamp? I had originally planned to add a switch to the cable and finish with a plug, but am unsure if this is safe without an earth wire. I hadn’t realised it was double insulated when I purchased.

Thanks for your help.

By 'pendant light fitting' do you mean a BC lampholder with a flex entry? If so, there is no need for an earth on account of the lampholder itself. If you are installing the holder in anything metallic, whether an earth is needed for that will depend on exactly how the holder and cable are arranged.

When wiring, ensure that the sheath of the cable is correctly restrained by the gripper or by threading the cores around the hooks / slots as per your particular lampholder. The cable may need additional restraint to prevent it being pulled out of the holder if tripped over or the lamp is dropped.
