Any suggestions for avoiding the duplicate posts that keep happening?
I'm trying to delete mine, but there are alot!

Do you get this page coming up when you post?

I've not had trouble with duplicates, but the forum page layout was misbehaving a few days ago, stretched out and odd text, like it was struggling to follow the page layout instructions.
It's been O.K for a couple of days now.

Just come back to the forum and there's adverts in every post, the pages are jumping around trying to reload / rebuild.

Fixed this, apologies!

I'd upgraded PHP versions to test out some shop software and put the forum on a version too new for it.

07779 555 007 for future reference lads. Whatsapp me your username I'll save you now. Took 30 seconds to fix I just had stuff going on with family booo. As always near bloody Christmas, the come out the woodwork. Much prefer dogs to people lol

What version of PHP are you running so that I can look forward to it breaking my software. I'm currently running 8.1.31 I hate updating as it always breaks something.

Have about 12 versions installed on the sever and I can change them individually per site.

8.1.31 is what works. And I switched back to that.

There are 3 versions known to break this forum and I installed one of those for Magento commerce as the newest version of that has some features in that run on 8.3.14 but the forum didn't like that version at all!

It always annoys me the way they drop certain commands each version. If there's no vulnerability problem just leave it in but put a depreciated warning. At least then old software will still run.
I can alter my version to newer from cpanel but if it works, don't fix it!

There are some serious zero day vulnerabilities in even the version we both run. Server side injection through a processing thing at some point during a contact form submission. TEF ran vbulletin who are terrible for patching it up and I even spotted the vulnerability being used on their forum a couple of years back.

What it did was steal a low percentage of all traffic from Google and deliver it to a spammy page with lots of dodgy ads on etc. Low enough so the website owner has less chance of finding out.

I left vbulletin 12 years ago for the same reason. And 10 years later their newer versions still didn't address it.

And its a problem with php itself so you're always working with vulnerable software and need to be aware of how to spot changes in your stats or something.

I do all my security myself. But i see TEF opted to go with the software makers own hosting which is terrible but very secure. Just slow as hell and you cant customise files yourself on their hosting. Only on-page stuff so bad for SEO too. They don't give you access to the files when you use their hosting.

No matter what version of PHP you use there's going to be people picking it to bits looking for vulnerabilities and they will find them. All you can really do is make sure you sanitise all input as much as possible. If I need a PHP script I tend to write it myself. At least then I know exactly what it's doing. Yes, I have been caught out in the past but at least I know it's my own stupid fault and I learn from it. Even the forum software that I use (site is pretty dead now) was written by me. 1000s of lines of code written over 10s of years. I don't update it now, just fix things that break when I update PHP.
Many years ago I used to play around with vulnerabilities in other peoples boards. Not do any damage but just the old days when you could exploit a 'feature' or inject some javascript that would either create pop ups or lead you to another site where the vulnerability was listed so that the sysop could look into the problem and fix it. If I remember right Proboard had some good 'issues'. Ah, the good old days :)

@Dan and @Moley

I understood everything up to “Fixed this! Apologies”
After that it just went a little nerdy for even me

🤣😂😉

I bet even you would know the basics(!) of programming. How about a little bit of 'Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code'. I reckon you could manage :-

10 Print "Hello World"
20 GOTO 10

I said what I said for comic effect…. I’ve done my fair share of BASIC, Python, C, Fortran…..
I was at school when the BBC Acorns came in… with its limited colour pallete, big chunky keys on the keyboard and the original “floppy” disks.

At the end of every computing class, at least 5 of the only 12 machines in the school were displaying upside down, or mirrored screens because someone had found the code to mess about with them.

Casting my mind back, there was a game that we had on them…. Looked very much like Mario… Small moustachioed dude, brick squares, question marked blocks…. But you could draw your own level… placing the different blocks and then playing the level. It certainly wasn’t called “Mario” anything….
The background tune was an 8 bit version of the captain pugwash theme, if that helps??? (Which might have been an optional soundtrack that could be loaded in… )

BBC micro, how posh. I started on a Vic 20. Although we did have BBCs at school. I did get told off a couple of times for using network commands to target other machines on the ethernet network.

Is it Repton you're thinking of? That had a tool where you could make your own levels.

Thanks for that… I just spent last 2 hours down a rabbit hole looking for old games.

Repton…. Had a look, but that’s not it.

This memory must have been when I was about 12…. When the first bbc computers were a few years earlier…
I started to question the “Mario” character, and I’ve come up with “magic mushrooms”

I maybe got this mixed up with the original donkey kong… with the ladders…. And did include Mario.

Now I just need to find the music.

The BBC was way after my school days. I can remember when they first allowed a calculator in school. My first computer was also a Vic20. It's amazing what you could do with 3.5k of RAM

At the same time charging some poor sod a fortune for the work that you should have been doing on their house ;)

Computer I learnt on occupied a building about the size of four large terraced houses and our calculators had a cranck handle on the end that you turned.

Calculators? Luxury, Bloody luxury!

We had little beads on a string!

Did you wrap your school jotters in wallpaper, or was that just a Scottish thing?

I don't mate! must be an age thing hehe

I'm proficient in html5 and php to a point. But seo is all in English which I'm still learn for very well.

Was that the female computer in Red Dwarf or am I talking bo[[0ck5 ?
