Electric Cable & Gas Pipe In Same Trench

Is there a specific regulation (electrical &/or gas) about running gas pipe & electric cable in same trench in a garden? Can it be done, if so are there any specific requirements?

Have been lucky to visit quite a few european countries, in the Netherlands they had combined service trenches/tunnels in the road which you could access via a man hole. had to stoop a little as they are about 5 feet high and about a single bed wide. inside were pipes for water,gas, electric, telecoms, etc.. all run on the walls. they dont need to dig up road again as its all accessible within. makes so much sense. There are similar in Denmark and parts of Germany
Even the soviet block managed similar, when visiting Moldova, they had shared utility tunnels, albeit homeless youths and families lived in them!
Seems us being an 'advanced' western nation and all have failed to grasp the benefits, especially on new builds.
