Working on a university student accomodation block, and the electric gates have started failing. They will randomly open then close about 3/4 of a meter then open back up as if under strain. Anybody know what it could be? Also the gates are contollable from inside an office by switch/ by fob and by phone from another site across the city

Is there anygrounds tuck in the rails/tracks along the ground which stops it closing? Also there are normally sensors across the opening preventing the gate closing if something is blocking the beam, could be a fault with that.

There not on tracks there electric arms, apparently there always failing but no one ever tells the customer what was up. I was possibly thinking maybe there's a capacitor inside the arm which gives it the umph to close and that's gone.

You can usually set the gate to manual, then you can try closing it to see if something is jamming the gate itself. If not it could be any of the sensors giving a problem, poorly aligned sensor mirrors, water on the sensor or the mirror, somebody is having a laugh with a fob, pressure sensor in the ram, are they fully electric or hydrolic, if they're opening without demand then it could be a control box problem blar blar blar...

Sorry I couldn't be more help but its the sort of job I need to look at with a cuppa and think for a minute. Then start disconnecting things! If its intermittent then all I can say is, Good Luck!

We manually closed it and it will work when it wants too, gonna have a nose at it tommorrow

Jenions, do you have the make and model number of the gates? If we could have a look on line someone may have an idea to help you out.

+1 it's all guess work otherwise,we need to see the diagram and what operates the drive/contactors to move it then we can say try this or try that.
Ok occasionally you do get weird stuff like drives performing erratically but generally there's a very logical explanation to how it works and how it can be improved.
