Ok so i dont have a copy of bs 5266 so hopefully someone here has a good all round knowledge. Emergency lighting in a high risk fire industrial building (saw mill) do all emergency lights leading to an escape need to be maintained? A lot of ours on site are non maintained a mix of both (previous maintenance sparky installed them) and also at the outside of final exits maintained or non maintained? Im looking to upgrade everything to LED so would like to get everything up to scratch.

A non maintained luminaire should operate upon failure of the local general lighting for example if you have a non maintained luminaire in a corridor it should operate upon failure of the corridor general lighting, this is not important if they are maintained. Luminares at final exits I like to see internal Exit boxes maintained as it familiarises people who are not used to the premises where the exits are. External would be dependent on the general external lights, would a non maintained luminaire operate upon their failure.

I am talking dedicated emergency lighting for escape routes as in the lights that shouw you the direction to the nearest exit. We have maintained emergency lights within our general lighting that cover the entire inside of the building.

I would make them maintained personally as I said before it makes people unfamiliar with the building more aware of the exits.
