Good morning,

I'm in the process of a partial refurbishment which will involve the present kitchen being changed into a bedroom instead and the new kitchen being installed in the adjoining living room. I received an estimate for the electrical work recently and was provided a provisional cost of £6,000-8,000. I was just wondering if this is the right ball park figure. I have listed the jobs that would be included. It is a 3 bed flat in London.

a new kitchen ring and new lighting circuit for the kitchen
making the old kitchen circuit safe and fitting new sockets in new bedroom
fitting of new LED down lighters throughout the flat
new consumer unit with new smoke detectors throughout the flat

Thanks in advance

£6-£8K in London isn't a crazy price. Depending on the FLats construction you could be looking at 2 days chasing walls , a day or so running in cables possibly allowing 2 days and then a day for 2nd fix and a day for the consumer unit and paperwork.
So that could end up a full weeks work ( long days ) for the electrician.
Then add on all the materials and you are easily in the £6000 ball park

It possibly sounds a little high, but there's always the possibility it's low if for instance you are having 100 downlights.

The simple answer is get 2 more quotes.

It's a construction and electrical job. "A new kitchen ring" isn't a set price/ cost. How many devices? How many receptacles? How difficult to get a new line to the location from the consumer unit? How many new sockets in new bedroom? Some unknown quantity of LED down lighters? How could anybody expect to "ballpark" an unknown quantity? How large is the new consumer unit and how many smoke detectors, all sight unseen? Do you realize what it is you're asking?
