Hi there

I've been asked to install a new extractor fan in an en-suite bathroom the fan is to be installed in zone 3 so I can get away with a 230V fan

I normally wire extractors with a 3 pole isolator and usually with over run timer but the customer just wants the fan to come on/off with a seperate switch and doesn't want an isolator above the bathroom door.

I know its common practise to fit an isolator to fans with a permenant feed and switched feed for the overrun (maintenance purposes I believe) but is it ok to take a feed from the light and wire the fan 3 plate, simply taking another switch wire to the current light switch and change the light switch for a 2 gang switch ( the switch is outside the bathroom in the bedroom and I have to install an RCD the the upstairs light circuit as its currently on a rewirable board with no protection just in case anyone asks

sorry for the long thread folks just wanted to be clear with what i'm doing any answers would be greatly appreciated Kenny

Hello Kenny

17th Edition says that all products to be installed to maufacturers instructions, and i'm guessing that in the fan instructions. It asks that the fan be wired via a double pole switch with a 3A fuse.

If its in zone 3 why don,t you put the 3pole isolator next to the actual fan if he does not want it over the bathroom door, at least you still have means of isolation to fan if need be.

hi there

if you do install it does it need a feed from a light switch to allow it to over run ie connector block in the pull switch and small sliding switch built in it

i have seen these in spain but not over here:)
anyone else seen them ????????
might have been a local bodge so not really that sure

cheers
