One good thing about following people who you interact a lot with is if you look at user's online at bottom of screen their avatars are clearly displayed if they are online, just saves looking through all the users to see if they are online.

So you can see there are 4 people I follow and their Avatars are above all the other users, just a quicker way of spotting people you chat with.
