In the wholesalers the other day waiting for my kit, drinking a cup of coffee when a guy walks through the door and says "well that's health and safety gone mad!"

What I ask.

I was working in an office changing some fluorescent lamps and had made a bit of mess on the carpet. I saw a Henry vacuum cleaner in the corner and asked a guy if i could use it.

Sorry mate you have not been trained on it.

yes i replied it is health and safety gone mad!!!!!

:banghead:

On the bright side you can tell your wife that next time she asks you to vacuum the house, or use the washing machine, iron or kitchen sink,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,sorted

In a situation like that I find it is down to the individual who for some reason decides to say no citing H&S as an excuse for having the percieved power to say no the only thing is when he approuches you and says could you fix my buffer as the flex has frayed around the connection on the unit then its sorry mate I am not insured to work on your equipment you best do it by the book and get the maintenance company out. But that will take 2 weeks he said so cant you use your hoover would be the reply

I just make sure i break something when asked to do the above! Never get asked a second time!

I was in Tesco a few weeks ago looking at the shoes which are hung by the laces on racks.
They didn't have my size but there was some new stock on the floor in plastic boxes. waiting to be sorted,
so I started looking through them - only to be told by a member of staff that I should not be doing that.

Not because they had not been sorted yet but because I was "not insured".

I pointed out that I could have hanged myself on the ones on the rack as there was no warning but was most unlikely to fall into the boxes.

It didn't make any difference.:confused5:

this is it....just someone getting delusions of grandeur....like a `d` list celebrity.....look at me....look at me.....

i think society`s getting like those things you had as a kid....like a box with the round hole...and the square hole.....and you had those shapes that you had to post through it.....

Give it time and there will be a training company providing a 5 day short course on how to use Henry lol.

Replied to a thread yesterday, a newbie that has just been banned because it was a health and safety firm trying to advertise.

He has not got back to me about my serous question!

Hi and welcome are you the health and safety people?

If so how high can a fork lift driver lift me with no cage with a pair of steps resting on the forks? Lol

This reminds me of that article in the news recently about someone who asked for scrambled eggs in a Sainsbury's cafe only to be told the person who is trained to scramble eggs wasn't in and they could only fry them.

i can answer that. it's 4metres unless the steps are secured to the forks, then it's 30ft.

I think the thing with H&S is they'll only get sensible about it when they realise that no amount of legislation can compensate for sheer stupidity.

Reminds me of a saying i heard the other day:-

The trouble with idiot proof systems is that it does not take into account the ingenuity of idiots.

this is styffling industry.....how the hell is anyone supposed to make a living with the health n safety cloud hanging over em....

It would be mildly interesting to know what this 'course' for using a vacuum cleaner actually covers - I suspect a bit of manual handling, pre-use checks of the plug, flex and casing, awareness of the flex is being run etc. All the kind of things electricians will have already been trained on in a more general application.
I'd also like to know what qualifications the person who came up with the course holds.

pre use checks of the plug, flex etc......probably the C&G 2377 Adam.....

Are you suggesting that this company send all their cleaners and anyone else who needs to use a vacuum cleaner on a C&G 2377 course to learn how to PAT test?
I was thinking more along the lines of a couple of hours training put together by some caretaker or H&S rep.

Tis very true.

My mrs works in a primary school, and the whole school went uncleaned for 4 days because there had been a delivery of new hoovers and none of the cleaners had been trained to use them. I kid you not, they were told they would face disciplinary action should they attempt to use the hoovers without the appripriate training.

You could not make this stuff up!!!!

no....was just in jest....

A few years ago I did a Health and Safety course and was told that everything I use at work should have operating instructions. If not, I had to go on a training course to use it. Bearing this in mind in my local hardware store I asked for a dustpan and brush with operating instructions explaining to the woman serving that this is a requirement for me to be able to use it at work. She told me using a dustpan and brush was intuitive and did not need instructions.

Why do you think that my ugly mug was looking out of the 3rd floor window? Have you seen how high those ladders are? And they were bloody heavy.

I'll wait up here for the cables to come through my side of the wall whilst the 18 year old is at the top of those silly ladders lol. BTW gents everything was safe or Steve would have downed tools, infact he did when the wind picked up. Following week he got a cherry picker, that made it a bit easier.

Health & Safety Executive has just banned laughing and smiling in my workplace on the grounds of "inappropriate use of facial muscles." :)

The thing with health and safety is it gets drilled into everyone from all environments! When working in my own home my daughter wont even let me go up a ladder saying its too dangerous to be working more than 3 feet off the ground! I am so glad she told me that now i know i shouldn't have been doing things like this for the last 30 years....lol

Health and Safety gone mad....absolutely and its mad everywhere and with everything!

Other week working in a staff rest room had to ware hard hat high viz eye protection and gloves to fix their computer while a train driver was sat 3 ft away having his dinner ho yes also had to have toe caps as well health and saftey go mad?

Why was he having his dinner in the toilet? That doesn't sound very healthy to me.

Have you forgotten to mention, he had his train with him at the time

Oh how i long for the good old days when you didn't need to go on a course to use a ladder, or build scaffolding or use a hoover....etc,etc, etc You just got on with the job you were trained to do in the first place! It now seems we need trained on something new every week at a cost to our pockets too.
