Please explain how a line-neutral reverse would make it spin the other way.
Simples.
If you reverse the line and neutral before the capacitor, there will be no change in direction.
If you reverse the line and neutral after the capacitor there will be a change in direction.
Can you tell from the pictures whether the two wires that have come apart are before or after the capacitor?

Yes, it's outside the tool initially...

Of course the motor is a part of the tool.
The flex between the switch and the motor is also part of the tool, as are the screws used to attach the motor housing to the rest of the tool.
I would not say (as you did) that a part of the tool is the tool.

As for extra cores, who knows?
