Have no experiance on this sort of thing so sorry if sound stupid

readings on suspect dodgy fridge
are about 12 M
simply i tested at 250 V , L-E. N-E ,

Does that sound dodgy or as expected ?
its an american style one

I presume you left it plugged in and tested at the CU?

Try Connecting L/N then test L/N to E

12m ohms is still good

Hi Morph: To be honest I would'nt be complaining about a 12 Meg reading. Only thing is: On any Domestic appliance you should link the L / N pins together & test from them to the Earth. I know it's sometimes difficult to link the L / N pins but if your going to be doing a lot of appliance testing i'd make up a lead / socket to do it.
 
yep rcd is tripping regular
i have added a rcbo to split the two rings but the kithen ring is still tripping the rcd rcd is fine i changed it i know the fridge is leaky as plugged in i get a ramp test of 5 mA less than when tested at c/u
i just did an i/r test by using the plug with a normal tester ie not a pat tester
i have tested cables and i get 999M ohms so i think it is fridge but i cant be 100 % i tested fridge and got 12 M ohm which seemed low , bot stuck now

Ok you need to do the test again with the L / N connected & see what you get, when you say normal tester I take it you mean a 500v Megger ? If your getting 12 Meg then to all intents & purposes this is a pass, but it may be tripping when the Compressor drops in & American style uprights are known to have some serious problems. A look at: www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk might pay Dividends as there's a lot of info on there about issues with these.

regular is wrong term realy
once at night, sometime here and there
happened twice today while i was there today
then ok for 5 hours then just triped again
seems to be happening more frequently
 
Not the correct way to solve the problem but, I normally keep a plug in RCD socket adaptor in the van. Change RCBO for MCB and plug the fridge into the RCD adaptor. If it trips, there's your problem !!!

yep i done that, i am thinking compressor myself too , a few weeks ago the fridge defrosted radomnly then started working again by itself
 
If you're getting 12m you know its good, put it on its own circuit non RCD side

The regs do allow it for certain equipment

*edit* others have said to switch RCD, it doesn't really help the client with their expensive fridge,
