Hey everyone, this is my first post on this forum..

I've seen a few other threads about similar topics but i decided to make my own as i feel its slightly different :p

I'm 19 years old, been working as a bricklayer/landscaper since I left college in June 07. I've saved up a fair amount of money and I am thinking about doing a intensive training course to become an electrician in the up and coming months with: Plumbing course | Construction Training | Electrician Courses | DIY Skills. (the complete training for electricians level 2 course to be precise)

My current employer has layed off around 12 people, (there was 40 employees) so my job is hardly secure to say the least.

My questions are:
1. Do you think it makes sense to train to become a sparky now? or is it like going from the fire to the frying pan?

2. if anyone can check out the course details are they the correct qualifications needed to work as a sparky in the U.K?

3. Does anyone have any tips about gaining entry to the industry? I've wrote to about 10 local companys so far, shall i ring the ones who didnt reply? ;)

4. kinda the same as 3 but, if i did the course and became qualified. do you think i should apply for jobs as a sparkys mate or a trainee sparky or just go in at the deep end?

sorry about the drawn out post  any info would much greatly appreciated

thanks,

Dukey

I always think that the colleges are a much cheaper option than these private companies?

There is no fast quick fix to become an electrician (as said many times on the forum before) so you will be in for several years of training and study.

I Would assume that you would begining your training with a City & Guilds 2330 level 2 but you would have to check on that?

As for getting your hand in on the industry, maybe it would be easier to work as an electricians mate first of all and be physical shown how to wire etc so that you could go away and produce your work as a carbon copy or better?

You will find all electricians work in different ways (hence plenty of debate on this forum!) but the principles are usually for the same goal.

There isn't one sparky that I know that knows it all so be prepared to continue to learn at what evey stage your at throughout your career. - its part of the fun!

Good Luck!

Warren
