Might be a stupid question, but i thought most MCB's were DIN mountable but, is there many manufacturers that make there DB's only compatible with their own breakers.

Reason I ask is im after a Hager 30mA RCD incomer, cant seem to find any localy. when i tried to put a merlin breaker in there it wouldnt mount right??

Cheers Will

like you say din is an industry standard like din's for car stereos. some do latch differntly on to the din rails. more often than not the main problem is lining the bus bar up due to differnces in mcb's

Some breakers, even though they are din rail mountable are physically longer so when atached to the bus bar the Din rail bit is in the wrong place, too far forward or back.

Sometimes you can make it fit with a bit of jiggery pokery, but not always.

Over the years I have bodged lots of wrong breakers into wrong boards, but I think it is bad practice IMHO. As a get you going stop gap, fine. Long term ...NAH

The DIN specification actually only applies to two aspects of a mcb, these are the size of the rear section of the breaker which fits on the DIN rail and the size (top to bottom) of the front escutchion (ok so the computer can't spell). The majority of manufacturers desin their mcbs and distribution boards/cus so that only their products can be used together. Where there are manufacturing links between different manufacturers there can be an interchangable capability however using a different manfacturers mcb in a db or cu negates any guarantee and puts liability, if something goes wrong, onto the installer.

Having said that I doubt if there are many sparks who have not fitted a different make mcb as the original was no longer available.

You gotta be carefull boys....... new reg in the 17th (can't quote it right now) accessories must be installed to manufactures specification. So you have a newlec consumer unit which IS a volex board with a newlec badge. But you cant fit a volex circuit breaker!!!!

and another one is fans, some instructions say must be fused down with a 3A fuse. So according to the 17th we cant wire straight from existing 6A lighting circuit!!!

Just scrape volex off and no one will ever know !

Is there any chart of some sort that you can compare the mcb`s to make selection easier of different brands/models that fit with others
