Hi all

Im looking for some software to manage our office work more effectively.
Customer base records ...profit and loss and invoicing that sort of thing

We are only a small contractor employing 3 -4 persons plus myself and wife doing books so it needs to be cheap enough to make sense for us.

any advise gratefully accepted

Cheers

take a look at "quickfile". does all you want and it's free.

Intuit quick books pro. Used it for 6 years now and it's excellent. Sure there is a cost but the improved efficiency of doing quotes, invoices, managing debt, etc, etc

don't use the online version, buy the PC based version.

Lots and lots of online accounts packages now also do estimates and customer management. Have a look at freeAgent which is specially set up for small companies and sole-contractors. Not especially rich on the office admin side but it'll do pretty much everything you'll ever need on the accounts/banking/estimates/invoicing/P&L side of things and it'll also produce your year-end analysis for those nice people at HMRC.
