I’m trying to secure a set of 10 tread glass-fibre steps (Christmas present), on to the top of my Berlingo van. Trouble is, my existing ladder clamps aren’t wide enough to grip the steps, as they just fall down between the runs. I cant clamp then other way, as the roof bars aren’t in the right position for the clamps. Is there such a thing as extra wide ladder clamps (if there are, I haven’t been able to find them!). My only other alternative is to get some box steel and fabricate wider bars (pretty simple to do).

Just wondered what you guys did?

I was going to suggest using the clamp the “other way” using the step part but I notice you’ve already tried this. Normally keep mine in the back of the van so don’t have this problem.
A mate of mine ties / lashes his steps to the roof, think I’ve seen a BT engineer do similar but don’t quote me.
Apart from that think you’ll have to make one, can’t be too hard… Can it? A bit of box section drill a hole, you can use the hook part of the clamp you already have… Job done?

Its amazing what you can find in Wicks. I was there on Saturday laughing at the prices of electrical gear when I noticed the metal rack…..2 lengths of 25x25 box steel! A few hours later of drilling…..and voila…a set of extra wide ladder clamps that fit perfectly!:D
