Hi All,

We are just finishing a new build of 4 shops and 9 flats which contain a lift as well, we have carried out all our testing and commisioning and where we had installed the emergency light in the lift motor room the lift installer has extended our circuit into the lift shaft for the shaft lighting, when i asked them if they could send me over there MW for their modified circuit i get a funny look and a statement of i dont have to the shaft is exempt! and this is the first time i have been ever asked for a certificate,

Does anyone know anything i dont know about regarding lift shaft installations?

Cheers

Anything that is installed by the lift installation company, ....they are responsible for, but should also where required be tested and commissioned complete with detailed record sheets of tests conducted and values obtained...

So they should be able to produce a test sheet covering the lift shaft lighting. If they won't give it to you, then ask the owner of the building for a copy. It is a legal requirement that lift installation work, be according to the relevant BS and other regulations, covering general public person carrying lifts.....

wonder on what grounds they think they are exempt from working to BS76571.

Lift installs should be carried out in accordance with the LEIA spec, the electrical side of which should be in accordance with BS 7671.

The rest should be in accordance with BS 7255.

The shaft lighting should be to BS7671. The rest is in the separate realm of BS7255 as Lenny pointed out.
I refused the final commissioning papers of a lift years back because of exactly the same thing. It was on an M&Q site, the lighting had been run in TRS and not SWA as the site rules required.
Lift company engineer was near tripping over his bottom lip by the time I’d finished with him. He was even worse when I insisted the car light be changed to 110V
