I have some incredibly sad news to share with you all..

Lucien lost his battle with cancer just after 5pm today.

He was surrounded by his family, a few friends and passed away peacefully.

There are electrical engineers and then you had Lucien.

Sit down and play this as loud as you can, it seems to be the only song that fits the evening.

I will try and keep you updated with further details unless others do.

We will be sounding our fog horn from the ocean liner RMS windsor castle tomorrow evening after I have warned the village. An eccentric gesture for a kind and eccentric person.

I thought he'd been quiet lately but I didn't want to consider that the worst might have happened. Never met the guy but would have loved to. A very intelligent guy who's knowledge seemed to span many fields and definitely a major source of knowledge and debate on this forum.

At least it was peaceful - that's all anyone can hope for in these sort of circumstances.

Thanks for the update Mark.

@Mark W thank you for bringing us this news it is a great shame you never met before to share your interests.
It may actually be a very good job we met later in life as instead of things being out of control they would now be really out of control with strange objects of the past.

I was working in Chigwell at the beginning of the year so I spent at evening at Luciens place, he wanted to come up here for a weekend but sadly that was not to be. We did however try and keep in touch daily. Even when he was very ill I still tried to send images of historic apparatus to keep his mind occupied. His knowledge was outstanding and I doubt I will ever meet someone who had such a huge and varied mental data base.

This is very upsetting news. Words feel completely inadequate to describe Lucien.
"One of a kind". "Complete and utter genius". "Exceedingly kind-hearted and patient man"
All of these clichés seem to under-describe Lucien.

RIP Lucien. He fought hard to the very end.

One of his countless specialisms was Compton organs. I don't think he'd mind me sharing a short clip I came across of him embarking on a repair as recently as 2 months ago. I'm told that while In much pain he travelled many many miles from home and still kept a cheerful disposition as he unpacked his cutters, soldering iron, and of course his Avo Mk 4. (Watch the whole video I clipped from if you want to see the full genius experience.)

As exceptional in knowledge as he was inspirational in dealing with his own mortality. This was the post we all knew was coming but didn’t want to read.

Lucien, there’s a P123 shining 119 tonight, break a leg.

I am at a loss for words.

We knew it was coming but it makes no easier to take in.
It is sad news but he didn't give up, continued doing what he enjoyed and excelled at until the bitter end.

A man that was respected by so many people, many who like myself, never had the chance to meet him.

Rest in peace Lucian.

P.s. whatever your beliefs are about religion, reincarnation, aliens etc.

I would like you all to think that for 2 days now lightning has been dropping all over the uk and especially over London.
I can picture him sitting on a cloud with a big harp, trying to figure out which combination of string and bow can generate the most static electricity and the biggest lightning bolt!!!

I have just discovered another thread of tributes to Lucien in a group about ancient theatre lighting on Facebook - it seems his knowledge and gift for educating was universal.

This was posted - a younger Lucien in happier times (holding a Mercury Arc rectifier, naturally!)

My heart goes out to Lucien’ family. What terrible news to read about his passing and I will say this that man was a gift from God and showed his brilliance with every word he spoke. I’m personally going to miss him even though I never met him but I loved reading his posts and replies. RIP our brother. ❤️🙏

The thing that keeps coming back to me about Lucien is his braveness in the face of his mortality. I was always puzzled almost at how he faced his affliction without a word of compaint or self pity. I only hope I am able to muster such courage at such a time. R.I.P and most sincere condolences to the family and close ones.

Yes! I first read of his passing on the British Pipe Organs facebook group.
Something I've been reflecting on is that in all of these diverse areas a very common comment is "I had very much hoped to meet him some day".
Maybe we should all get on with meeting the people we plan to meet.

His tributes are coming in from far and wide. Here is a picture that has been shared by one of his best mates. Our tribute last night, we have had confirmation the fog horn reached at least 2 miles and a whole village in Staffordshire now knows Lucien Nunes!

Towards the end you could see how powerful his enthusiasm was as it was being attacked by this dreaded illness. On more than one occasion I had to tell him to rest over the telephone so he could take a breather as he was not going to let this situation get in the way. At the end of each telephone call this enthusiasm had triumphed over the thing that was trying to take it away.

He seemed to have a gift for being able to understand things beyond most of us.
Maybe that had something to do with it?

I've only just seen this and read every post, every single one is from the heart and confirm what an incredible man Lucien was.
Personally I feel very sad , much more than you'd expect from someone you've never met, I think that says a lot about his influence on all of us too. I'd like to think he's moved on to a far better place.

Been away for a few days and just caught up with the incredibly sad news about Lucien. As all others have said, a fantastic man and absolute genius with his thinking and knowledge. Through the forum I have found out things from him I wouldn't have had a clue about but his name will live on for a very long time. Rest in peace Lucien, you definitely made a difference to life
