I suppose the moral here,is a proper testing method,would determine exactly what is the fault is,instead of gueoping.

I replaced the pull chord switch and it sorted the issue (ages ago, forgot to reply). Have done this once before already but the problem was slightly different as the light on the switch didn't come on at all.
