Chaps,

Fitted a dual RCD MK consumer unit on a rewire a couple of years ago, and now the client is complaining that one of the RCD's keeps tripping.

I am going try all the usual things, however, what i was wanting to know if anyone has had any issues with them randomly tripping or going faulty?

I know MK are not as good as they used to be.

As the customer if there is a pattern ie every time he uses the iron ,dishwasher etc

All I would say, as I'm sure you already have in mind, is that if has been fault free for two years then unlikely to be rcd and more likely to be items with lowered IR or more 'leaky' electronic gear added over the two years? Never had any real issues with Mk gear. I have had various makes of rcd that pass the 50% test but on ramp trip at just over the 50% !

Don't think I've replaced any MK gear that I've installed for god knows how long now.

Granted they're not what they once were but still pretty reliable IMO.

Probably stuff thats been added over crimbo IMO. Well thats if its the rcd with the skts on and not the lights.

Thanks fellas,

I did in fact pay a visit before xmas to have a 'quick look'.

He did have lots of new lights inside etc, however, these were all DI.

I had a problem like this a week before christmas where the customer had a main 30mA MK RCD that had been in for about 20 years she to had it tripping intermittantly I found nothing at the time but said me thinks it is an appliance so best thing to do is take note when it trips and see what was on at the time but because the nature of the fault it could trip at any time plus ignore the new digital radio or tv or hoover as they are double insulated and concentrate on the kettle, washing machine , dishwasher and if you are not sure then unplug it for the duration you do not use it she said I will switch it off at the socket like I always do and I said no dont do that as your installation is 30 years old and the sockets are single pole got a call last week yep it was the diswasher . This is the problem with fitting RCDs to an older installation or one where single pole sockets or FCUs are used and you get the dreaded neutral to earth fault
