hey guys i worked for a big company for a number of months then recently they asked me if i would consider going self employed and working on a price so on monday i started my 1st day as my own boss i am now registered with the inland revenue and just waiting on my UTR number coming thru

now what i need to know is i need a van and i have found a nice transit connect from a dealer just down the road but i dont have the 4 grand to buy it out right so i am looking to get it on fiance how likely is the fact i am a new start up to effect the hp application??

shouldn't be a problem. they will check your credit rating. that's all they go on. good rating = accepted. however, check with your bank for a personal loan, might be cheaper.

got a interview with the bank business manager next week mate gonna see if i can get a small business loan as all i really need is a van i have all my tools, a uniform and the work is there all being well so fingers crossed

As a sole-trader, you retain the debt on any finance etc that you seek, unlike a limited company where the company retains the debt.

The only problem you may encounter is proof of earnings because you won't have any yet from your new venture.

might be a good idea to buy a cheap but tidy older van for under a grand, then go for newer one once established

I paid £2850 for my connect 2 years ago. its in top condition, not bad on the miles, 2004 "53" redg, but be careful DONT get the 75PS engined 1.8TDDi, they are slow as i found out. Go for the 90PS 1.8TDCi engine, and stay away from the bottom spec model, get at least the L or LX and side loading door is a must.

Cheers.............Howard

I got a 2004 fiat scudo, only cost me £2500 so it was ideal, I would have gone for a transit if it wasn't for the fact that it was so cheap.

I'd deffo recommend a slightly larger van of this size over say a berlingo or astra van as the little bit of extra space is well worth it

got a vauxhall combo 2005 in top condition ex bt van cost £4000 a couple of years ago and i'm starting to find it a bit small now, could do with a vivaro or renault traffic (i know... it's the same as a vivaro with a frog on the front!!) but a combo is an ideal startup van. the 1.3cdti is a little slow but returns a constant 48mpg.

I am looking at getting a vehicle which can load from the back and has side loading - get this - on both sides. Oh and I will be able to fit the kids in too.

I am going to be getting an estate car lol - only something around a grand - maybe a mondeo or laguna estate (only as they look like a company reps car) and get it sign written.

On a serious note though it will be cheaper than a van for the time being and only when things pick up would i start to look at small van.

Try not running before you can walk.

Good luck though with whatever you decide to do and hope it all works out for you.

I am also getting an estate car - 406 HDi, huge inside, I know peugeots very well and have plenty of faith in them (had 5 of them before) and they can be had in great condition with high miles for £1K!

Black the windows out and its a van anyway!

i was thinking along the lines of a combo or a connect as i dont really need a big van but the reason looking around the 4000 market is cause i dont want to spend say 800 on a van thats been around the wolrd then pump another 1000 into it to keep it running i figure a good 55 plate with low miles will last a number of years

I've just put a deposit on a peogeut partner like the citroen dispacth side loading both sides, 3 seats all electric inc windows and I've just applied for a tesco credit card which gives you as far as I can see in the T's and c's £2500 @ 0% for 13 months which I'll probably have paid off by then

Im just about to get a van on contract hire, non maintained and 15k millage allowance PA , which as Im just about town will more than do me fine, they sort the tax out each year and no mot's required as new van, can be signwritten and mid reange vans start at £ 175 a month plus VAT, there will generally be 3 months in advance as a deposit but you get a brand new van for it, they will credit check you so if you fail the credit check then you would have to do contract hire in what they call non status ( bassically poor credit) youll be charged more per month about £ 250 - £ 300 a month plus VAT and they will want more up front generally 1k,
they told me a lot of people are having to go this road now, as last year a lot of firms folded, the owners have set up again but have struggled to be accepted as prime customers being 'new companies' as finance co's have tightened the lending rules and have become stricter.
thing is you could end up buying a lemon and the can end up costing you loads to put right ,- its why I havnt bought one outright for 3 - 4 k and have gone down the contract hire route.
good luck with everything mate
