those plastic caps are a nightmare to get out though, rarely do they just pop to one side, usually just deeper into the hole.

I've had to resort to screwing in a 3/4" x 8 a couple of turns and pulling them out with pliers before.

Try using electricians tape placed over the cap then they sometimes pull out.
