Hello everyone!

I am a newly qualified spark. Mature student. I already have a day job but I have always wanted to learn a trade so I took some courses and now have an assesement with stroma.

I feel confident that I will pass as I understand the basics of testing and have installed a sub board into my shed with power and lighting and it all passes the required values.

The issue I have is that whilst I understand the regs and reasons for testing and values i should get i can't get one big worry out of my head.

I worry about fire and safety.

Especially given what happened at grenfell tower block fire.

I wonder how you chaps deal with the worry that your work has potential danger and whether I am just going through what all electricians go through and that once I have more experience this feeling will pass.

Maybe I should just stick to the job that I know and have more training and experience in?

Would love to get some feedback.

Thanks.

I used to worry about testing and the whole fire scenario, its just confidence that comes with time and experience. As long as your testing using the correct methods and practices you will be fine, just remember 'its only as good as the day you tested it'. As long as you have the correct insurances and methods sleep easy.

Welcome to the forum.
All jobs entail some form of risk and it is the essence of the job to minimise that risk.
Professionals have spent a lot of time, and our money, in preparing the wiring regulations to guide you in minimising that risk. Compliance with the regulations should reduce the risk of any damage from work you have done to an absolute minimum, therefore, you can be confident that you have done the best you can to make things safe.

Hi Rob. You say you are a newly qualified adult learner and i have joined the forum to ask about the viable options for adults wanting to learn the trade. I also noticed you are from Woking, i'm only up the road.
Can i ask what courses you have done as an adult, if they where part time so you could continue earning and if they have lead to any employment???
Thanks
Mark

Thanks for all the encouragement. I feel very welcome.

Mark. I have done a fair amount of electrical work in the past but needed to get some formal qualifications and also to forget everything I thought I knew and learn the trade correctly.

I undertook some weekend courses. Part P, a domestic electrical installers course and also the 2392 testing course. I then sat the 17th edition amendment 3 test.

I also have an assessment with stroma so I can legally undertake electrical notifiable works.

It's a really tricky one learning as an adult because I already have a job that pays well but I don't enjoy it as much as electrical work so I can't really Make it a full time job as I am not as quick as a traditional electrician that has come through the ranks and got his experience when young.

I have really enjoyed the learning experience but I woukd say that it's a lot to learn and even after all the training an electrical company will still only take you on as an improver.

Trade skills 4 U are a good company in Gatwick for training.

Thanks.
