I would use the speed control operated by the throttle pedal. Forget the switch in line with the motor - this is under great stress.

Hi,i can see what you have,and with the basic layout involved,i would do away with the throttle switch,and find a way of operating the potentiometer,with the throttle. This will need to be sprung to a zero position,if the pot has one...this means speed can be changed with both tiny hands on the wheel
