While doing a few initial tests during a quote for a rewire the ZE results were around the 3 ohm mark on what appeared to be a TNS system. An old iron conduit with two core cable inside and a steel clamp around the intake for the earth.
initially explained to the customer, and got them to contact UKPN. I thought that would be all sorted ready for me to start...
UKPN are now after the second visit saying that it is not a TNS system and they haven’t provided an earth. They are able to change to PME but are unsure at the moment whether this would mean excavation to the road way, or just digging back to below where they have installed an iron intake for the existing cable. Either way, the job would be chargeable (£1000+)and a simple service head change is apparently unavailable.
So it looks like I’ll be converting to TT, which is not a huge issue. However, what would your opinion being on providing a means of earthing via rods. Making sure they are providing suitable Ra. Which I know around me due to chalky ground good is 50-100ohms. However leaving the earth connection to the incoming supply/iron conduit connected, as it has a far superior earth value than what I’ll be able to achieve and both are now effectively extraneous conductive parts?
