I know what you're saying Tony, but some of those really old ceramic 3036 fuses can be, or at least feel as if the fuse blades are welded into fuse base. Pull too heavily and unevenly at the top or at the bottom and they can split in two with nothing holding them together but the fuse wire.

Now this has me fascinated.

Please explain just why a fuse would explode? It’s only the reaction people have to pull a fuse back out when they hear the initial “crack” when it’s put in under load that causes problems. That comes down to proper training. You keep on pushing the fuse home, if there’s a fault the fuse will deal with it. Even in a metal head you’d have to be totally cag handed to short one to earth. You need to know what you are doing and be confident, without both of them you are heading for disaster.

It was an easier way of suggesting it falling apart in your hand, rather than actually 'exploding', as clearly that's highly unlikely given the environment and energy involved!

I think the DNOs are more concerned with fraud than safety issues. They have the law on their side, and no matter how dangerous their equipment may be, it's illegal to tamper with their equipment. They have a much publicised and documented reputation for being greedy, untrustworthy, money grabbing b******s. I wouldn't give them the pleasure of exposing myself to prosecution.
