Was having a look at our gas and electric bills today, and its getting depressing.

I would like to keep using our appliances as and when we want... and apart from working out how to shut off the hot tub overnight.. i've not made any other changes. (will be confirming efficiency by using an inline consumption meter against usage last year)

We have a standard <4kW PV arrangement on a south facing roof, Been in a few years now, and we still get FIT payments on a 50/50 basis

Heating is a mains gas combi boiler, no tank to divert PV to an immersion.

Does anyone recommend a battery storage system that can be fitted to what we have? Basically to collect the excess that would normally go back to grid?
Do they have to be fitted outside? (i've seen two on jobs, both Tesla, both outside... dont know if it is a regulation, or just more suitable)

We may be getting an EV at some point in the future... maybe a year or two

Does it know which electricity needs to be going to and from battery, what to use up first, or is it all just magic?

Slight departure from the question you're asking, but would shutting the hot tub off at night save money (assuming it's powered up again each morning)?
This is what I’ve done.

I read the manual… unorthodox, I know… but there is a way to make it only heat during filter cycles, and those can be timed… so they are timed for the morning when the sun is shining for PV, but it’s still a bit chilly to be dunking in.

Maybe doing that has already brought my evening and overnight consumption down, and I don’t need the battery’s…. But it’s something to think about.
