OK, job on at present. customer buying some of materials. wants 16 old eyeball lights replaced with LED. i sourced the downlight adaptors no problem. then we come to the dimmers.i told him the get the nearest brushed steel dimmers to match, so ..... screwfix.. varilight modules facepates and grids and modules. easy. order arrives, faceplates, dimmer modules. no grid plates. sends client back to s/fix. to get the grid plates. they sell him MK grid plates. so he goes back 15 miles to exchange. none in stock, get them for tomorrow. and the faceplates that sould come with those small screws to fix to the grid plate ain;t got them. \god \|Gimme Strength.

customer was moaning about losing time off work, going to screwfux, so i told him that if i were supplying the gear, it would be 20% more, but i;d be the one sorting out the problems. then he could get on doing his roofing at £1000 a day.

The assistants in Screwfix have little or no technical knowledge, a switch to the majority of staff is a switch and that's it, all they are interested in is getting customer in and out, money in the till goodbye Sir/Madam have a nice day.

little tech. knowledge pete? som e of them need a map to get to the butty van that pulls up outside at 10.00 am.

I don't really expect the staff at Screwfix to be very knowledgeable. I have had issues at Eddys before asking them simple questions to be greeted with the blankest of blank expressions!

Defo make up the shortfall on the next stage Tel. Teach him to be penny pinching over what? 3-4 quid..

thing is, he's a gypsy.does property repairs, roofing, guttering etc. gripes at paying me £200/day for electrical work, but wants to fix my roof for £1000 +parts, for 1 day;s work. who's the sucker here?

I'm wondering how much screwfix is at fault and how much the client is at fault. Just because you tell the client one thing doesn't mean he has passed that message successfully on to screwfix.

Personally, my experience of screwfix is a good one. Staff there are helpful, I have a good bit craic with them, and they will price match etc. If I'm going out of my way to get stuff there, I'll check on their website if they have them first to save a wasted journey - takes seconds.

Unless it will cost them. I once had a screwfix assistant tell me they will price match any product against any local wholesalers and I should use them for everything. I told them their cable prices were 35% more than my local wholesaler and I had a quote to prove it. After a word with the manager the line was "Well we can't match that, it's way too much off" Sort of defeats the spirit of price matching I thought.

I have a screwfix a stones throw from my house which moved in over the last year. On the same site is an electrical wholesaler which is friendly and has good prices and helpful staff. On the same site is a plumbers merchants and a tiling wholesaler. It's only the brake disc pad and shoe wholesaler that lets the rank of trades down. If there was a small shop in the middle selling milk, bread and butter, I'd be a happier man than I am now!

I would only use screwfix for Hi Vis stuff / workwear I have never used them for materials, Ifind it like an Argos for Electricians
Yes they often run out of pencils! I wonder what the Chinese think when they make millions of mini pencils with 'funny word' on side!

I don't use them a massive amount anyhoo, tend to use local wholesaler and TLC Direct. But must admit it's very handy when you're in a pinch, especially when you need a cooker connection unit at 3:30 on a Sunday.

I have one 5 mins away from my house and can save a trip in to town or good if i'm running late in a morning. Only use it for certain things though. They've offered to price match cable from my local wholesalers but i don't like prysmian cable so never bothered. Usually pretty good with returns etc.

I use Screwfix quite a lot. Rarely the absolute cheapest compared to on-line specialists, but nearly always cheaper then my local wholesaler (Senate). - The latter, from which prices need to be prized out of the staff, painfully, reluctantly, slowly, and one at a time.. always needing to haggle. - And even after that, an almost guaranteed price shock.
I admit Screwfix stocks can be hit and miss, but that seems to be the case with many places.
I even got really nice green tea and fresh fruit the other morning at an Electricfix counter - I recon the only green tea in the building trade :)

Time to change wholesalers then imo. I've switched over to electric centre as they've just opened a branch near me and the manager is a chap who I've known for years as he's done the rounds round a few wholesalers over the years as counter staff. They hold in the region of 240K of stock in this branch, have smashed the prices I've been receiving from the various wholesalers I've been using over the last 10 years and its never a problem to get a delivery to site even if that means one of the staff chucking it in their car and bringing it out if the vans already out doing the rounds. Last Sunday we was changing a panel board at an age concern place (done on a Sunday as had to be done out of hours) a few unexpected problems come up and needed a few minor things that I didn't have on the van. I phoned the branch manager on his mob and he was happy to open up, grab the bits I needed and drop them off to site which was a 40 mile round trip....This is what I call service :)

Got a fantastic ex-spark @ Edmunson's here. go in and describe a problem and he will come out with all the parts to work the solution. Great bloke.

Also. I wanted a new pair of side cutters this week and they had them on the shelf at Neweys. Now I know they can be dear so when the price came up at £29 plus VAT, I said I can get them cheaper at Screwfix. The guy went away then came back and said I Could have them for £28 all in. Result!
