Just a Rant and in a way lesson learnt ... Should always price up even the smallest of jobs.

Last week had a call from a bloke saying he'd like a couple of outside lights sticking up - which he was providing - he'd described an outside shed which had sockets and stuff in - so didn't need to worry about neutrals at switches because if worst came to worst could just FCU from the sockets hense the none visit. Anyway, No problem i said, booked in today and said it would take best part of a morning (having not seen the job give myself some manoeuvre time and all that)

Stick postcode (a village outside my home town) expecting to find a little country house / farm ... Nope ... 3/4 acre scaffolders yard, a couple of lights turned into 8 floodlights and 2 double sockets with the Outside Shed / Distribution Board a good 40/50meters away.

Not complaining as i've just landed a fairly decent job, but needless to say i've had to rearrange for a few weeks time as thats not a morning job. And now I'm left twiddling my thumbs till lunch time as this afternoons job aren't picking up their phones - which is the real bugbear!

Customers love them but bloody hate them.

Nearly every call I get asks "How much will it be ?" I always answer "No idea, I never give prices without seeing a job so when would be good for me to come and have a look ?"

Made a couple of errors early on into self employment with assumed quotes, thankfully nothing costly.

Got a text a few days ago asking if I do EICR's and how much. I never give a price this way and responded:

"Yes I do EICR's and as for a price, I can't say without looking at the job. Happy to come and take a look"

Needless to say I haven't had a response!

I still get the 'can you put a security light up on the wall there...'. 'Yep just need to fine somewhere suitable to pick up a supply & run a cable for it', '........what cable, what supply?'. Ummmphh, can't wait for wireless electrics!

thats why when i call people for quotes on things i usually tell them.
