I installed a security alarm on sunday, after buying everything i thought i needed on Friday i turned up at the job to find the alarm cable i had on the van was actually 3 pair phone cable,What was i to do,i had just got up at 730 on a Sunday,so had the customer,I needed some cash for my holiday next week,So i used it.It is miles easier to work with because it is a single core and quicker to connect,
U can slag me off now if u want!:)

hi
Im not sure if it matters ,is there an "approved" cable for alarms?
as long as it can carry the current, which is probably not much,i think its a good way of doing it;)

I cant see why it matters,I might use phone cable for the remote keypads all the time anyway.

The problem comes when you're the person servicing the alarm every year. Solid core telephone cable snaps very easily during maintenance and when using screwed connections. IIRC, EN50131 makes note of using only cable which complies to the relevant standard (i.e. BS4737 type cable)
