Grateful to have found this forum to hopefully get some clarification. We purchased our 1965 built home last august and at the same time purchased some utilitech canless lights to replace the two track style fixtures hanging in the kitchen. A year later and I finally got to install said lights. I removed the old fixtures one at a time and when I got to the last one ran into something I have no experience with. Background of layout is one of the kitchen lights also doubles as an entry and has its own switch. It only had one set of wires running to it. The other two work off the same switch. The first of the two had two sets of romex wiring and after install I turned the power back on and the light worked fine. The second one had a set of romex wires I assumed running to the first and then it had an older set of wires (black,red,white wrapped in a black mesh) I ended up having to cut a new hole as the original was directly under a attic joist and there wasn’t enough clearance for the new fixture to fit. However now the older set of wiring is about 4 inches short. I’m attaching a picture of the wiring inside the old box. The romex style wiring was attached to the light fixture and only a white from the old wiring as attached to anything. The black and red were tied together and capped within the box. Reading some I’ve read about switch loops and am not sure if that’s what I’m looking at. I didn’t know if I could attach a junction box and leave the red and black together capped off within the box and then use a quick connect to extend the white enough to hook up the new fixture. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
