I can across this lovely display today in one one the orange sheds.Shame there was not the same sort of display in plumbing so I could replace my gas boiler

I wonder if the have good Professional Indemnity insurance plus this is a classic example of the sheds saying yes you can fit a fuseboard and here is "Willie" who is 75 and a retired civil servant and he has been on a 5 minute course on how to fit a new consumer and he is here to a special advisor to show you how to do it.

Jings you could not make this up could you.

There may be a legal case here for anyone willing to take up the reigns. I was thinking along oldtimer's post really with regards to indemnity. Maybe a word in the manager's ear about notification and liability would see the removal of this display, or an adaptation of it to include advice about the dangers of self installation, the requirements for testing, and notification, and maybe some cards of local registered electricians who could safely install the goods bought at the sheds.

what orange shed is doing here ...is doing us all a favour...think about it.....they sell this to customers..then it all goes ---- up....thats when we get the call...and `willie` gets seen for what he really is......

a little tip for anyone struggling for work. Go and hang out at B and Q. I think I've potentially picked up a job every time I've been there.

Your not that guy they are talking about lurking in the electrical section with Professional Electrician along with a Schemie Badge on your T shirt ?

Anyway lets get serious because our trade is officialy a joke how come Customer dont tell me this is a highly skilled proffesion I can go down to the big orange shed and buy a consumer unit for £80 . Plus the nice old pensioner on speed is "happy to serve" will give me all the coaching I need.

but its up to folk what they do in their own homes/property......the problem i have is when you get incompetents charging for services rendered....chances are that when a DIY attempt at install goes wrong....a proffesional is called in anyway....its all about free trade and free trade must be allowed to continue...unhindered.....otherwise we really have lost it......we are subjected to too much state interference as it is.....should it go like america?....where you aint allowed to do anything to your OWN property?.....is that what you want here..?....

no, mate, I was in there twice last week, an old lady looking in the wrong isle for an rcd adapter. i pointed her in the right direction, but there were only black ones, she wanted wanted a white one. i'm fairly sure I could have sold her an rcd socket (fitted) rather than an adaptor. Another guy was struggling with some plasterboard on the way out, I offered to help him, and we got chatting. turns out he was doing a house refurb and I went around for a look. His sparky was not around for a couple of days and he needed some wiring re-routed. In the end i declined as didn't want to step on someone else's toes.

But it got me thinkings.

Two quick visits, two potential jobs....

If I'm ever quiet, I'll be hanging around the aisles, offering my 'advice', ie, why don't I come over and take a look at that for you?

I guess branded work wear is the key thing, not got any job from B&Q but did get a kitchen fit out from Ikea. I wonder how much loitering you could do before a member of staff tells you to do one :1eye:

I don't have to deal with Part P here in NI...I was under the impression its a legal requirement to have works that are notifiable notified, and it would be possible that problems could arise potentially if/when you come to sell your home. I doubt it will be but some mortgage lenders are after Periodic Inspections now before lending the money.

And you have your 3,000th post coming up, nice going!

well this is the issue with proper competent persons in every sense of the word..playing second fiddle to a 5 week wonder....just because he/she has dumped some cash in the direction of a scheme provider.....but arn`t even competent to wire a plugtop up right...and it stinks really....

lol... i sent a email to a landlord other week regaring a Electrical Trainee and some of his work...!!

went to town on the job as well and issued EDN and quoted no less than 7 regulation breeches!
